I have been going through past editions of magazines I have collected and came across an article in In Business magazine Jan/Feb 2005 (no longer published):
"In some measure, our economy at the corporate hegemony level has come to resemble the command-and-control system that guided the economy of the former Soviet Union. "In many sectors, we have become like our former Soviet adversairies," said Neil Harl, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture at Iowa State University. "We Talk about markets and market forces. But the unelected oligolpolist corporate actors in today's economy create the market and control it, much like the apparatchik of the Soviet system."
This paragraph came from an article titled "Financing A Sustainable Future", discussing what it will take, both in structure and financial cost to create what many of us believe we want to have for our economy.
Bottom line for me is that the less I can depend on the corporate/industrial/government complex, the better off I can be mentally, physically, emotionally, economically, and otherwise. So far there is no effective way to "vote with your dollars" by not buying a new good or service. I choose to simply refrain from buying something that doesn't meet with my expectations, values, or needs. Unfortunately, the companies that have the opportunity to profit from my purchases don't have a way to listen with an unfiltered ear.
I have been thinking about a web site resource where individuals like myself who have ideas and suggestions for how services and goods can be improved, can be discussed and picked up by the service and good providers as well as hopefully some triple-bottom line oriented entrepreneurs can be inspired and have a ready resource for clients and reviewers at the ready. If anyone is interested in this kind of resource, let me know.
