7th Street Road Diet Suggestions (for discussion)

Here is a quick list of ideas to incorporate bike lanes and expand pedestrian comfort and safety between University Academy and the Children's Museum. These suggestions essentially take 7th St south of McDowell Rd to a 2 through lanes on each side with a center left-turn lane and a buffered bike lane on both edges, with the north-bound bike lane north of Jefferson St able to be used as vehicle lane immediately after events. This obviously will impact vehicular movement, but I am interested to learn how the models demonstrate the impact and how it can be mitigated by using light rail and other options. Please provide your feedback in the comments or email to me at rkitekt318@hotmail.com. Also, if you notice any inconsistencies, please email me so I can correct them.

McDowell Rd to Fillmore St:

·         Right through lanes in each direction are converted to buffered bike lanes with north-bound lanes used after events for cars also
·         Potential collaboration with ADOT to allow temporary access to second east-bound turn lane from north-bound 7th St

Fillmore St to Polk St:

·         Shift east curb one lane to the east aligning through and center left-turn lane with same pattern as to the north, to the west curb
·         Right through lanes in each direction are converted to buffered bike lanes with north-bound lanes used after events for cars also
·         In the interim, lanes can painted in new alignment with removable planters with trees and plants in area where new curb alignment would installed, similar but denser to 1st St
·         Provides a treed landscape buffer between vehicle traffic and pedestrians on east side for children and chaperones from University Academy

Polk St to Van Buren St:

·         South-bound right turn lane would begin with bike lane being crossed over by turning traffic
·         North-bound bike lane same as to the north
·         New development at east edge of 7th St would incorporate deep treed landscape buffer as to the north to maintain pedestrian corridor (bus pull to be eliminated as route 7 bus turns left at Van Buren making it unused

Van Buren St to Adams St:

·         Shift east curb west one lane removing right turn lane and installing wide tree planted landscape buffer between sidewalk and vehicle traffic to maintain consistent pedestrian corridor from Fillmore to south entrance of Children's Museum
·         Bike lanes continue same as to the north
·         Temporary measures similar to the north can be implemented until curbs replacement

Adams St to Washington St:

·         Right north-bound lane painted as buffered bike lane also to be used after events for cars
·         South-bound right combo lane (through and right turn) painted as buffered bike lane with event use allowed

Washington St to Jefferson St:

·         Right south-bound lane as full-time buffered bike lane
·         Right north-bound lane as buffered bike lane with event use option

Jefferson St to Grant St:

·         Maintain integrity and quality of existing bike lanes in 3/1/3 configuration

Grant St to Apache St:

·         Paint buffer between bike lane and right through lane to maintain consistent and same width as all through vehicle lanes

Apache St to River:

·         Ensure integrity of existing bike lanes and establish connections to river paths from 7th St on north side with buffers between car and bike lanes where right through lane exceeds width of other through lanes
